Ivy’s Pricing model

Ivy’s pricing model is comprised of 5 project-based plans. The plans range from $29 and up per month. The difference in price varies according to the number of projects you will have. This means that the cost of membership will increase according to the number of active projects in your account year over year, this way you are only paying for what you are using.

Why did you suddenly introduce a different pricing model?

The pricing was changed so that both small and large design firms could enjoy unlimited features while paying for a plan that fits their exact business needs.

What if I subscribed to Ivy under the original pricing model?

Ivy will respect the original pricing model until your renewal. Once your subscription is renewed you will be moved to the new pricing model.

But what if I already have a lot of projects? Won’t I be paying a lot more?

You will only be paying for your activated projects. Every time you renew your subscription you will receive the relevant amount of activated projects in your tier.

What is the price for each plan?

The pricing plan is based on the number of activated projects that can be created within a year since signing up or renewing an account. The cost per project decreases as you move tiers.

How is a project activated?

A project is only activated and counted towards your project threshold once you create an invoice or record a payment. Once your project is activated, it will be counted in your plan.

What if I don’t activate my projects? Will my price change?

No. Projects without an invoice or a recorded payment will not be activated or counted in your plan.

When will I move up a plan?

You will only move up a plan if you exceed the number of activated projects in your plan. For example: Let’s say you are currently on tier 1 paying $29/month. That plan included the ability to activate 3 projects. If you activate the 4th project your plan will be upgraded to tier 2 and you will move to the $59/plan with up to 7 activated projects.

What happens if I archive or close a project?
If you archive or mark your project complete, it will still be counted in that year’s total allotment of projects.

What happens when I renew my membership?
All-Ivy memberships are auto-renewed at the end of the annual subscription. Your plan will renew at the same tier on which you completed your last subscription term.
For example, if you signed up for Ivy on Tier 1, but mid-way through your subscription term, you upgraded to Tier 2 (due to the number of projects you created), at time of renewal, you will be auto-renewed on Tier 2 pricing.

You can see your renewal date under the “My Account” section in the platform.

How can I see which tier I’m currently in?
You can ALWAYS visit the Account Info tab under “My Account” to understand all of your account details. Here you will be able to see:

  • What membership plan/project tier you are subscribed to
  • Your subscription start and end date
  • How many projects you have used out of your total project amount and how many you have left
  • The cost and number of projects in the next tier

Can I upgrade or downgrade from one tier to another?

Your account will be automatically upgraded once you exceed the number of activated projects in your tier upon the next billing cycle. For example, if you’re on tier 2 (paying $59/month) and you just activated your 8th project you will automatically be moved to the next tier of $99 a month. The new cost will take effect on your next billing cycle so if you’ve just paid your monthly subscription before the automatic upgrade, you will receive the rest of that billing cycle at the same cost as the old one on us.

13 Gifts Interior Designers Want for Valentine’s Day

No matter how you feel about red roses and heart motifs, let’s be honest: It can be hard to resist Valentine’s Day. What’s not to love about a chance to spoil one another and indulge the winter blues away (at least for one day)? With V-Day just around the corner, we polled a few interior designers using Ivy about what kinds of gifts they’d most love to get—and give—for Valentine’s Day.

Karen Leach of Boho Design Studio in Maui

A crystal air plant—On Etsy you can get an amethyst (or another type of crystal) with an air plant attached, sweetly packaged in a little box that says “You Rock” or “You are a Gem”.  Such a cute small gesture for under $20.

A luxe accessory—For something high end, I’d get a designer accessory from Hermès or Louis Vuitton, like a business card holder for your purse or nice business pen.  I got a business pen from Tiffany from my first boss, who I assisted for 10 years, and I still keep it in my bag.

An activity to remember—Depending on what’s around, maybe a foodie experience or a helicopter ride around the coast or city. Airbnb has an experience section for different areas where people offer unique things.

Airbnb Experiences

Airbnb

A fruit subscription—Since we live in the age of health, I got someone close to me a Fruit Company subscription and it has been the coolest give. Every month she gets a basket of fruit. Not like “meh” fruit—like, amazing fruit. It’s something unique and different especially for the friend who you know is super organic.

A cashmere scarf—Always a goodie, depending on where you live.

Vanessa Helmick of Fiore Interiors in Portland, Maine

A laser measure—To save precious time! You can find a reliable one in the $80 to $200 price range at hardware stores like Lowes.

A handmade ivy necklaceThese charms sold on Etsy celebrate everything we love about Ivy—friendships that began in a Facebook group and grew into a positive business community and helped break down walls in our industry.

New AirPods—Perfect for the interior designer who loves to listen to podcasts. I’ve been listening to Wingnut Social and Kimberley Seldon while making the four-hour round trip to Boston Design Center or in airports like the Logan International Airport on my way to market.

Experiences that immerse us—Preferably in zen (spa, massage etc.) or inspiration (trips to local museums, live music).

Wine—Always wine.

Sarah Walton of Walton Design Studio in Dallas

Kate Spade Brooklyn-scene scarf—It’s versatile and makes a chic addition to any outfit.

Florals by Hand—Artist Alli Koch’s new book is so creative and inspiring.

A Voluspa candle—Everyone loves a new, great-smelling candle.

The Ultimate Guide to Palm Springs for Designers (Christopher Kennedy Style)

According to Palm Springs-based designer, Christopher Kennedy, Palm Springs is “the capital of midcentury modernism”. Kennedy shares his comprehensive guide to this desert oasis including his recommended events for design professionals attending Modernsim Week, go-to spots for cocktails, and his ideal ‘day in the life’ in Palm Springs.

To get special pricing for Christopher Kennedy’s Showhouse at Modernism, click here for tickets and use promo code “SHOWHOUSE10”.

How long have you been living in Palm Springs?

Christopher Kennedy: 15 years, I cannot even believe it! I moved here when I was 27 years old. At the time, it was all “gays and grays” (not that there’s anything wrong with either!) To say that I was the youngest person in Palm Springs wouldn’t even be boastful. It’s just mathematics.

The Ultimate Guide to Palm Springs for Designers (Christopher Kennedy Style)

Who are your favorite vendors and tradespeople to work with local to Palm Springs?

CK: Modern Home Design Showroom is my go-to place for tile, cabinetry, countertops, outdoor lighting, Neutraface house numbers, and all those good building blocks that we need for remodels. There are also so many wonderful antique dealers that are online but based in Palm Springs. A la Mod, Modernway, Re(x), Christopher Anthony Ltd, and The Antique Galleries are a few of my favorite sources. For plumbing and appliances, Ferguson is my go-to.

Tell us about Modernism…what makes this design week unique, other than its extraordinary location in the Palm Springs desert oasis?

CK: Modernism Week is the design world’s Coachella Festival! Last year, we had about 100,000 people from 19 countries and all 50 states. It’s an extraordinary celebration of midcentury design and lifestyle. Something else that makes it special is that guests really get to enjoy our Rat Pack cocktail culture…they get to put on a fabulous caftan or Trina Turk dress and sip a martini poolside in some fabulous modernist home.

The Christopher Kennedy Compound is the official annual Show House of Modernism Week. That’s quite an undertaking to tackle year over year, on top of your job as a designer. Tell us about your process in leading the renovation and bringing together designers from across the country to create unique rooms…

CK: What does it take to bring together a dozen or so of the nation’s most famous interior designers, two dozen or so world-class brands, and two very invested homeowners (while maintaining their happiness), all while undertaking a gut renovation of a classic property between October and February? A renovation that cannot be even one day late, because we have 5,000 people who have bought tickets. Needless to say, it is a labor of love. I will spare you the graphic details. Needless to say, my team and I don’t sleep much.

What are the best hotels / rentals to stay during Modernism?

CK: For hotels, I am partial to La Serena Villas. Or, if you would like a very authentic MCM experience, check out the Del Marcos Hotel – there are suites dedicated to famous architects, great artists like SHAG, and there is even a Christopher Kennedy Suite designed by yours truly! For a residential experience, check out ACME House Co’s offering of vacation rental homes.

Outside Modernism Week, how do designers and other professionals in the industry regularly connect with each other in Palm Springs?

CK: I was President of our local Chapter of ASID; the Interior Design Society is also very active here. Because it is a small market, brands will often do “trunk shows” or designer dinners. Jim Thompson often shows their spring lines over happy hour at a fabulous house; recently, Phillip Jeffries hosted a lovely dinner that was a great get-together opportunity.

La Serena Villas

You have such incredible taste…we want all of your personal recommendations of places to go, cocktails to sip, and places to dine (for design enthusiasts, of course). Please walk us through your ideal Palm Springs day in the life as Christopher Kennedy…

CK: Arise at a reasonable hour; say 7-8ish, and go for a hike on the Lykken Trail. It only takes a bit over an hour, but it’s a steep climb, so you get a great workout and the reward is a fabulous view overlooking the entire Coachella Valley. It is very dog-friendly and my Harley loves it!

After your hike, stop at Koffi for a pick-me-up and then head back to your hotel or vacation rental house. Take a dip in the pool – personally, I love a morning soak in the hot tub. Go ahead, have that mimosa…you just burned over 1,000 calories, so you have earned it.

After a relaxing morning (of course, you just posted your gorgeous photos to Instagram), head to the Uptown Design District for lunch or brunch…in Palm Springs, that normally involves some more bubbly. Then, spend the afternoon walking and shopping in the wonderful fashion and decor shops on Palm Canyon Boulevard. You will want to grab a cute Trina Turk or Mr. Turk outfit for tonight’s dinner, hit all the vintage shops that list on 1stDibs…and if you happen to stop at my own boutique, well, all the better.

The Ultimate Guide to Palm Springs for Designers

All that shopping will leave you tired, so head a few blocks south and stop by our gorgeous new Starbucks Reserve (it’s worth seeing – trust me), and then, hit my secret shopping spot: The Antiques Galleries of Palm Springs. The Antiques Galleries are like Palm Springs used to be – before all the dealers went online. The “thrill of the hunt” still exists and you can find some amazing bargains. Or, if you are done with shopping, walk two blocks from Starbucks to the Palm Springs Art Museum, which is truly world-class.

In the late afternoon, head back to your hotel or house for (another) dip in the pool, or perhaps, a disco nap. Everyone in Palm Springs eats dinner very early, so take your time getting ready and avoid the crowds. I suggest heading back Uptown for a pre-dinner cocktail at the Purple Palm restaurant, where you can sip your beverage poolside in a Martyn Lawrence Bullard-designed space. Then, walk across the street to Birba, where the fresh faire is served al fresco under olive trees.

We tend to retire early in the desert, but if you are up for some late night action, take a four-minute minute Uber ride up to Toucans Tiki Bar, a Palm Springs institution that I happened to renovate a few years ago for some dancing and aperitifs.

That day is a “10”. OK – now give us your hit-list for the following:

Go-to events at Modernism Week 2019:

Arthur Elrod was my mentor’s mentor’s mentor, and he deserves his day in the sun! Yes, that was his own cliffhanging home featured in the climax of the James Bond film, “Diamonds are Forever”. I am proud to help sponsor a star for Elrod on the Palm Springs Walk of Fame…the dedication of this star is February 15th. There are several Elrod-themed evens happening during Modernism Week.

The Signature Home Tours offer an inside tour of some of the best homes in Palm Springs, across many of the city’s best neighborhoods. Get tickets here.

La Vie en Rose, a project that I recently finished for private clients from Canada, will be open for three days of tours.

Official cocktail of Palm Springs: Martini, of course. I prefer mine with vodka, slightly dirty, with two olives. The “Honest Martini” at Mr. Lyons is my favorite.

Mr Lyons Palm Springs

Favorite coffee house: Koffi is my go-to. They opened their first coffee house right around the time I first moved to Palm Springs, and have now expanded to four locations. We also have an incredible Starbucks Reserve that opened last year. Howard Schultz himself came for the opening; it’s that nice. I love their “Nitro” coffee!

Favorite restaurants to dine: For happy hour and a great gourmet burger in a steakhouse setting, check out the Lounge at Mr. Lyons. Don’t miss out on their charred brussel sprouts – they are a must! For Mexican food, I frequent El Mirasol; don’t be surprised if you see locals and best buds Suzanne Somers and Barry Manilow there. For a great meal in a beautiful room, Tropicale can’t be beat. They do amazing fish dishes, but for a cheat meal, the fried chicken salad is my favorite!

Favorite bars for cocktails: Paul Bar is new and a hit with locals; a sexy room with excellent craft cocktails. But everyone knows that my “weekend office” is the bar at Trio which has great Wi-Fi, a lively atmosphere, and an all-day happy hour that runs 11am to 7pm…just how we like it in Palm Springs!

Favorite hotels for a short stay: Colony Palms designed by my friend Martyn Lawrence Bullard is a fabulous and historic 1920’s property that MLB updated in his signature fabulous way. Korakia Pensione is an oasis in the desert, and the rooms have no TVs – so it’s a great way to unplug (which really is what Palm Springs is all about).

Colony Palms Hotel

Favorite hotels for a lengthy stay: If you have more time and want a truly Palm Springs experience, I suggest renting a home. If you want to stay in an authentic Christopher Kennedy design that also used to be owned by Sandra Dee and Bobby Darin, check out splashpadps.com.

Favorite shops to purchase home furnishings and decor: The Uptown Design District of Palm Springs offers countless fabulous options! It has a great combination of vintage stores, fashion boutiques, and decor shops. A la Mod vintage, Wil Stiles and Trina Turk fashion boutiques, Grace Home Furnishings, Seaplane mens’ shirts – and of course my own showroom – make this area a great destination.

For many, the fireplace is the ‘heart of the home’. A fireplace is often mentioned on a homebuyer’s most-wanted feature list when considering a new home. According to the 2013 National Association of Realtors survey of homeowners’ desire for a fireplace, participants mentioned fireplaces as one of their most highly desired features, with 40% mentioning that they’d pay additional if the home had a fireplace. Additionally, a recent Angie’s List survey of more than 100 real estate agents across the United States found that more than 68% believe having a fireplace can increase the value of the home. More than 83% of those real estate agents see fireplaces adding anywhere between $1,000 and $4,999 to the home’s value.

Behind the Design: Christopher Kennedy

Behind the Design: Christopher Kennedy – Palm Springs, CA

How did you get where you are today?

Christopher Kennedy: I was born in San Francisco and raised on the Central Coast of California, before going to school for architecture in Missouri. I thought I wanted to be a Disney Imagineer, but that didn’t work out as planned. I received my MBA after getting my B.Arch and spent a of couple miserable years in the finance world while living in Los Angeles. Then I realized that life was too short not to do what you love, so when I was 27, I moved out to Palm Springs to get back to my roots in architecture and design.

“A Golden State of Mind” is your self-description…how does that define you as a designer?

CK: I definitely like to infuse my designs with a healthy dose of sunny California optimism. I also believe that everything in life begins with our thoughts – so I like my designs to inspire people, lift their spirits, and bring out their best.

Behind the Design: Christopher Kennedy

You are remarkably nostalgic and value tradition and rituals. How do you apply this passion and life essence to your design work?

CK: I definitely think very carefully about floor plans, function, and the small rituals of daily life. Where are my clients chopping their vegetables? Does their furniture plan entertain gracefully for a party of 6, or a fundraiser for 600 if that’s their style? How can we encourage our clients to be organized, to have meaningful conversations with their loved ones, to get a good night’s rest, to wake up in a bedroom that inspires them….all these questions factor into my designs.

“We really owe it to our clients to bring our best and most creative selves to the table. And that takes time.”

Behind the Design: Christopher Kennedy

What are your thoughts on color?

CK: Well, I do love color. But I also believe in giving color some room to breathe. Honestly, I tend to keep my large furniture pieces on the neutral side. I love white walls. Of course, it’s true that I did give some of my favorite clients Adrian Pearsall sofas recovered in “Smurf Blue” fabric!

Behind the Design: Christopher Kennedy

You’re based in Palm Springs…what’s the design scene like?

CK: Of course, we are the capital of midcentury modernism! In Palm Springs, people love design. It’s a hobby and a pastime. There’s loads of nostalgia in this town. Everything old is new again. That said, I never want my interiors to feel overly retro or “kitsch-y”. I strive to keep my designs sophisticated – grounded in the past but looking towards a bright future. It is my firm belief that if the great midcentury architects and designers were alive today, they would not be resting on their 60-year old laurels. They were futurists and thinkers…they would be asking, “What’s next?”.

Behind the Design: Christopher Kennedy

What are the quintessential colors you can see in people’s homes in Palm Springs?

CK: My favorites are blue and green – aqua, turquoise, lime, grass – think the color of the trees and the golf course; the pool water and the sky.

Behind the Design: Christopher Kennedy

In your opinion, what is the Palm Springs “heart of the home”?

CK: Hands down, the bar. We really do live the Rat Pack cocktail culture here! Second would be the pool. Every home has one.

Behind the Design: Christopher Kennedy

What’s your business model?

CK: I believe in design fees plus profit on product. I offer both hourly rates (with a minimum number of hours) and flat fee contracts. I find it works out about the same, but people have different preferences. I want us as an industry to quit using the word “markup”! It’s just not accurate. “Markup” makes it sounds like we are making money for doing nothing. At the very worst, it is a purchasing fee. It is a service.

Currently, how I charge for products is that I split my difference between wholesale and retail with clients. This is about a 60-100% “markup” depending on your net pricing structure. And yet, clients will go from questioning your markup to thanking you for the discount! It is a small mental shift for the clients that makes a big impact on your company’s bottom line. It’s been a real game-changer for me.

Personally, my next goal is to start charging MAP (Minimum Advertised Price) for products, or just beating the average online price by a buck or two. There really is no reason why clients should buy through us for less than they can buy for themselves online.

Frankly, we as an industry should be charging the average/lowest online price for products PLUS a 10% purchasing fee, but that is whole other conversation!

How does designing make you feel? What’s your business mantra?

CK: Designing makes me feel GREAT! But, it is such a small part of my daily activity. We probably spend 15% of our time designing, 30% of our time marketing, and the rest of our time implementing. Of course, there are whole books on this subject – but it takes so much time just to “transition” into the creative space. I have to silence my phone and turn off my computer. We really owe it to our clients to bring our best and most creative selves to the table. And that takes time.

Behind the Design: Christopher Kennedy

As a firm, you champion several causes close to your hearts, one being your annual charity event “The Christopher Kennedy Compound” at Modernism. What can we expect from this Show House in 2019?

CK: I started The Christopher Kennedy Compound five years ago because I thought it was crazy that Palm Springs – this design mecca – didn’t have a Decorator Show House like other cities do. And because I believe that Palm Springs is a world-class resort town, I like to bring together the best and brightest designers in the country. This year, we have Celerie Kemble, Michael Berman, Joe Lucas, Lori Paranjape, Brian Paquette, and other fabulous designers all creating rooms. It is going to be a show-stopper for sure! The best part is that the proceeds benefit architectural preservation and scholarships for local architecture and design students.

Behind the Design: Christopher Kennedy

What are the big Markets that you go to? Why does you think it’s so crucial to attend?

CK: I attend both Las Vegas Markets and both High Point Markets annually. I also like the Atlanta AmericasMart and MAISON & OBJET Paris in January (though I don’t often get to attend the latter.)  To me, Markets are such a great opportunity to – of course – see products in person. But more than that, you get to know the people behind the brands. It is also a fabulous time to network with other designers. We need to support each other more in this industry. We need to discuss our business models. It would be fabulous if we had standardized business models, so that clients would be less confused! We need to band together and charge more! One of my core beliefs is that there is enough to go around. Just do your best and don’t worry about “competition” – there is plenty of abundance out there!

“I realize that I have been given a platform and have a certain standing in the community. I strive to use it for good.”

Why did you choose Ivy as your software of choice for your business management needs?

CK: Ivy is such a great company to work with. They are adaptive, easy to reach, and agile.

Behind the Design: Christopher Kennedy

How has Ivy transformed your design business?

CK: Clients pay so much faster! Clients love the interactive nature of Ivy and they LOVE being able to pay with credit card or bank transfer (I prefer the latter but accept the former).

Behind the Design: Christopher Kennedy

What’s an Ivy feature you can’t live without?

CK: Charging clients the credit card or transfer fees.

Behind the Design: Christopher Kennedy

What have you learned from the Ivy Design Community (the Facebook Group)?

CK: Too many good things to count! But really, I think the biggest takeaway is that “it’s not just me!” We tend to all struggle with the same things. Putting yourself out there, admitting what you struggle with, and asking for help can be intimidating. But, it helps us all grow as a community. I realize that I have been given a platform and have a certain standing in the community. I strive to use it for good. I realize that when other designers out there hear that I have the same struggles, it can help to ease theirs. But, really, it is about all of us growing and learning together.

The Designer’s Guide to Selling Wallpaper to Clients

Everything you need to know about specifying wallcoverings for your projects.

Written by Erin Minckley, founder and designer of Relativity Textiles

To all of the pattern lovers in the world who advocate for papered and painted walls, vibrant style, and ornamented surfaces, high five. I’m not preaching to you, however, I’m about to give you sound advice from a seasoned professional that you can use to educate the non-believers, the stubborn clients who are averse to wallpaper. Here are some tips for getting their minds to change about the pretty surfaces you’re going to create for them and how it will significantly impact their rooms and homes for the better.

How to Sell Wallpaper to Clients

Why wallpaper? As an artist and painter, I use the walls as a starting point for the room when I design. I think about them as a backdrop, a way to tie a space together, or as a wall to tell a story. It’s not so much a ‘theme’ as it is a way of thinking through space and architecture while adding personality and emotional quality to a room.

Wallpaper has been around for many centuries, actually, since the age of mechanical reproduction. Don’t start snoring yet. It’s important to note that wallpaper was once a way to mimic the luxurious, intricately woven tapestries found in the homes of the royalty and elite classes. Paper both helped to decorate the space with a picture or pattern but also helped to insulate the walls. It covered little cracks in the brick and prevented wind from coming through. Likewise, some wall coverings are used for sound deadening and many help to muffle an echo in a large room.

Then came the glam, the glitz, the flock and fringe and orange and yellow of the 70’s. This was the hay day for wallpaper designers like me because the sky was the limit. People were adventurous with their style, whimsical, bold and they knew that fashion was at the forefront for adorning their walls.

The problem is, that’s as far back as our collective memory goes. I assume that if you’re reading this article, you’ve had the distinct privilege (or horrifying experience) of removing a paper from the 70’s in your own home or your parent’s home. That little claw thing! The scraper! The spray! And so much agony to get it off the wall.

Well, guess what? Things have changed (thank goodness) and technology has changed in the home and remodeling industry quite a bit since then. Wallpaper hasn’t changed much since the 70’s, but two major factors have: 1) The way things are printed, 2) The glue you use to get it on the wall.

The Designer Guide to Selling Wallpaper to Clients

PRE-PASTED PAPER

It’s components are 50% recycled paper and it’s got adhesive already attached to the back of it. To apply to the wall, simply wet with water. Like an old fashioned stamp, you lick it and stick it. This wallpaper grabs onto the wall in 5 minutes and is good for 5-10 years. To remove the wallpaper, simply saturate it with water and it will come right back off. Note: No toddler tinkle is good enough to get this stuff off, so, don’t worry. It’s good in bathrooms and won’t peel off with a little steam from the daily shower. Once it’s down, wipe the wall clean with a soft sponge and you can either paint or apply a new paper right over the top.

Check out our Digital Wallpaper on Etsy – “Pattern Society” (a sister brand).

Because it’s digitally printed, it’s not always the most durable paper and ink. It’s sort of wipeable (when you use water and a paper towel), though getting crayon off of here might ruin the paper. Heavy solvents are an absolute no-no. But, if you’re specifying wallpaper in a commercial environment or kitchen, you’d likely need a vinyl or Type 2 substrate (read on for more information).

GLUE TECHNOLOGY

Here’s my go-to tub of paste for easy install. You’ll need to check with your installer and the wallpaper manufacturer to see what they recommend as far as paste goes. But, this product was introduced to the market for those that are hesitating on the “permanency” of paper. You’re not getting a tattoo. It will come off in 2 years when your baby outgrows the nursery, or in 5 years when you’re ready to sell the home. It’s not ideal for apartments. That’s when peel-and-stick stuff comes in handy.

PEEL AND STICK TILES

These tiles are made by Hygge & West. It’s pronounced “Hooga” people. They’re based in San Francisco and have an array of fun designs to choose from for the more whimsical spaces. Now, I don’t really recommend you do this yourself unless you took “DIY 101” in college. If you’re handy, this might be a breeze. But, if the idea of changing the chain on your bike or making a macramé plant hanger gives you the hives, please don’t try this at home. Get your wallpaper installer from this list of qualified professionals.

PEEL AND STICK PAPER

There are so many products on the market that are deemed “Easy to Use” on the packaging. But, I’m here with a bias. I took “Advanced DIY” courses and still hate to install this type of material. It looks cheap, it’s hard to use, it’s not inexpensive, and therefore, I’m going to implore you to stay away from it. But, if you do decide to impulse purchase something fun from Tempaper, West Elm, or other vendors, please do yourself a favor and hire someone to install it. Ruining $500-1,000 worth of wallpaper is a quick way to aggravate your client or spouse.

TYPE 2

Why are some wallpapers called “T2”? Wallpaper has its own safety regulations. I found out that there is one place that does ALL the fire rating for wallpaper in the USA. You have to mail them a piece of your paper and they’ll tell you about its qualities for residential and commercial environments. For example, the burn rate, how far out the flames go when it’s on fire, the fumes it produces, etc. Wild, right? I’m sure you’d like to know that T2 is less likely to be a safety hazard to the guests of the homes you design.

COMMERCIAL GRADE PAPER

Type 2 is a stronger paper, it’s been tested to be more resistant to sun damage and fading; it’s more wipeable; it’s got different fire rating, and it’s suitable for hotels, restaurants and other high traffic environments. These qualifications aren’t always front and center on the manufacturer’s website, so unless you need to know if it’s up to code, don’t worry about the distinction. But, do know that if you need a paper to be printed on a T2 substrate for your project, many small vendors will gladly have their design printed custom for you on a more versatile ground. Just ask!

WALL PREPARATION

Though I’m mentioning this in the end of the article, it’s perhaps the most important step along the way. If you don’t prepare your walls correctly, a few things might go wrong, and I’m speaking from sheer experience here. Once, I was on a job site installing paper in a new build restaurant. I’d flown to Salt Lake City from Chicago to deliver a custom wall mural and hang it for an old friend and designer. The contractor had “prepped” the wall with a coat of primer and a coat of latex paint. I hung the first drop of paper at 20’ off the ground… and then it happened. The wall came down with the wet slimy paper. The paint had been saturated by the glue, and it went through the primer and even soaked the paper front of the drywall. The sheetrock began to crumble and everything just fell to the floor.

WALL PRIMER SPECIFICALLY FOR WALLPAPER

An analogy I often share is that latex paint is like a jar of marbles. It has inherent gaps in it, at a microscopic level. To prime that wall with a wallpaper specific primer would be like filling the jar full of sand. It helps to seal the wall and creates a barrier so that the glue and water used in hanging the paper will not penetrate the wall/drywall. It also gives a bit of a shiny/slippery surface for the wallpaper to sit on, which is helpful when you need to move the paper around a bit to match your pattern.

Sanding and patching. People ask me, “But do I really have to fill all the holes and sand the texture on my wall if I’m just going to cover it with paper?” To which I say, “absolutely”. You will see every dimple and crease through that paper. If you’re too lazy to sand and prep (or your wallpaper installer/ painting contractor tries to skimp) you’ll for sure see the texture of the wall right through the pattern once it’s dry.

Relativity Textiles

TEXTURED WALLS

There are some thicker papers on the market for those tough southern California and Texas walls with orange peel look that won’t reveal the wall textures as much. You can also try hanging a “Wallpaper Liner” first. It helps to diminish all the dimples exposed but can’t hide them completely. Again, your installer should know if this is an option that will work for your walls, so ask them. It will however nearly double the labor of install, so be aware of the costs involved in hanging a liner and a paper because you’re basically hanging paper twice.

HOW TO CALCULATE WALLPAPER?

There’s a real mathematical algorithm for this that usually boggles people’s minds. But, I strongly suggest that all of you talented visual learners draw a picture. You need to know the total width of your walls in inches and the total height.

My website and some other vendors will help you do the math.

But, in most cases, your installer should be doing a site visit, taking their own measurements, and telling you what you need to buy. You should know that most installers will encourage and/or advise you to order MORE than what you actually need. “Why do they do that?! It’s already such a costly product, I don’t want to waste an extra roll!” you might be saying. But, in about half of the cases I’ve been involved with, either the installer mis-measured, the designer mis-measured, or the drawings were off. In this case, you might be stuck ordering that additional roll after the fact.

Two things are complicated about that. One, the rolls could’ve been made to order so it’s not going to be exactly the same color. Many times, when you try to match a prior order, it’s not 100% accurate (both handmade and digitally, it’s nearly impossible to color match to 100%). The other issue is that timing is going to be impacted. Let’s say your installer is scheduled next week and you just figured out you’re short. The product won’t arrive for another 4 weeks now, because maybe it’s not in stock or the print shop is busy or the designer/company/showroom is on vacation…Now you’ll have to wait another month to get the paper installed. It’s always better to be in possession of one additional roll, that you could use for another project rather than being short (obviously, if budget allows).

WHAT CAN I DO WITH MY LEFTOVER WALLPAPER?

Most companies will not take returns of wallpaper that you didn’t use, unfortunately. But, we have a couple of ideas for you so you can make that paper count:

1: Line the drawers of your dresser or the back of your China hutch with it like MegMade in Chicago is known for. Look at this WGN News DIY Project and Better Homes & Garden Article for reference.

2: Use the print in small doses like we did on our Graceland Carriage house Stair Risers project or in a framed vignette with trim molding (check out how Centered By Design does it here).

3: Wrap some holiday gifts with it or make DIY ornaments like we did with Claire Staszak from Centered by Design, featured in domino.

4: Cut it up and use it for thank you notes with a pretty little pop, like we do in our office. (We have a lot of waste! It’s sad but true.)

5: On Chairish and Etsy, I’ve seen a lot of posts where people are selling the wallpaper to other designers with small projects. This is a way to get your money back. Chairish will take 30% commission on your sale so price it accordingly.

How to Make the Most Out of Winter Las Vegas Market 2019

Las Vegas Market is nearly here and it’s the perfect time to get last minute plans in place, make reservations, and order last minute supplies. As a branding, web design and marketing expert for interior designers, I’m incredibly honored to be attending Winter Market 2019 as a guest of Ivy! Whether you’re attending market to source products for a specific project or just to keep tabs on upcoming design trends, it truly is the hub for the West Coast design industry. As a self-proclaimed over-planner, I’ve spent hours researching the best booths to visit, places to stay, things to do and tips to ensure a super productive, hyper-inspiring trip to Market.

TIPS TO PREPARE FOR MARKET

Plan Ahead: Market is huge and overwhelming, even to seasoned veterans. Make a list of vendors ahead of time and map out their locations so you can cluster their visits together. Review the Exhibitor & Product Directory here.

Prepare Client Needs: Have dimensions, specs, and budgets prepared ahead of time for projects you’re sourcing for. With so much going on, sourcing is much easier when you’re looking for something very specific.

Reach Out: Market is the perfect opportunity to become in-real-life friends with your Instagram friends. Spend some time the week ahead of Market to reach out and see who will be attending. Invite colleagues to dinner, a panel discussion, or even to walk to Market with coffee in the morning.

Create Digital Vendor Packets: Create a PDF packet including a cover sheet with your name, business name, business address, phone, email, resale number, copy of your resale license, and your state’s resale certificate filled out. Keep physical business cards in your bag to hand to vendors and be ready to email your Digital Vendor Packet when you’re ready to open a wholesale account.

Register for Panels Ahead of Time: Some panels (like Ivy’s How to Boost Your Profitability that I’m speaking on) ask you to register ahead of time. Make sure you take care of that ahead of time so you’re not fumbling around on your phone at the door.

Update Your Media Kit: Market is an optimal time to network with vendors for collaborations, meet with editors, and secure some press. Make sure your digital media kit is up to date so you can pull up stats on the spot. Your media kit should include brands you’ve worked with before, social stats including followers, reach and engagement rates, as well as demographics of your followers to ensure you’re a good fit for a brands’ target audience.

Order Extra Business Cards: Order these super high-quality but VERY affordable business cards and save your $3/piece letterpress cards for clients. They’ll arrive in plenty of time!

WHAT TO REMEMBER AT MARKET

Save the Shuttle Schedule: The Strip has a magical way of looking like things are closer than they really are. Screenshot this shuttle schedule to catch a ride to Market from most hotel locations.

Bring Your ID + QR Code: At registration, you’ll scan your QR code that will be emailed the week of. They’ll be checking ID’s so make sure you have it!

Schedule Flex Time: Plan for time to not go as planned. Give yourself flexible time on each floor to mingle, network with vendors, pitch PR, and take a breather.

Snap Images In the Showroom: Take phone pics in-person for items you’re sourcing, so you can upload them later into your digital product library (such as Ivy’s Product Library).

Wear Flats (and bring bandaids for blisters): Even though Vegas market is substantially more compact than other markets, you’ll still walk miles and miles each day. Opt for comfortable shoes you’ve worn a few times before, save the cutes shoes and heels for dinner.

Keep Gadgets Charged: Your battery will be drained quickly walking the floors of market, so keep things charged with a universal power bank. We love this one because it charges our laptop, iPad, and phone without adding extra weight. Write your initials on your phone charger so no one accidentally snags yours at a charging station!

Stay Hydrated: We really mean it, you’ll be walking a lot at Market, usually while sipping cocktails. Have a water bottle in your bag to stay hydrated in that conditioned Vegas air.

TIPS FOR AFTER MARKET SUCCESS

Upload Your Contacts: Use the business card uploader app, Abbyy, to automatically digitize all the business cards you acquired.

Follow Vendors on Social: Make sure you’re following your favorite vendors on Instagram to make sure you’re first to know about new collections in the future.

Follow Speakers on Social: If you saw someone speak and loved them – give them a follow on social media! They’d love to hear from you, so feel free to send a direct message (DM) letting them know you enjoyed their presentation. You never know the collaboration opportunities that come out of a friendly note!

Send a Follow Up Email: Create a templated email to send to new contacts, re-introducing yourself, linking to your website and social media. Make sure your signature includes a headshot so they can put a name to a face.

Send a Pitch Email: If you met any editors during Market, follow up the next week with a pitch email highlighting your latest project to be featured on their publication.

WHERE TO STAY

I’ll be staying at Vegas’ newest boutique hotel, the NoMad, specifically for just how non-Vegasish it is, channeling all the bespoke old New York vibes you’d never expect on the strip.

THINGS TO DO

Catch the show of a lifetime at Lady Gaga’s Enigma – tickets are crazy expensive, but seats still available for Saturday before Las Vegas Market.

Get inspired at The Neon Museum. A must for design lovers of all kinds, it’s the perfect Insta-worthy trip and break from the strip.

Hike Red Rock Canyon State Park, a quick Uber ride from the strip. Trails are still open during the government shutdown, and these vistas aren’t to be missed. Catch the Kraft Mountain Trail at the end of Sandstone Drive within Calico Basin for an easy, one hour hike. Cell service is spotty at the park, so make sure to schedule your Uber back ahead of time.

See Yayoi Kusama, Infinity Mirrored Room and Narcissus Garden , at the Bellagio. This light and mirror installation is a breathtaking installation that’s a quick stop between Market events.
