Ivy’s Guide to ICFF: May 2018
ICFF in New York City is a four-day affair celebrating global design at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. This year marks the 30th annual ICFF NYC May 20-23, with more than 36,000 interior designers, architects, retailers, representatives, distributors, facility managers, developers, manufacturers, store designers, and visual merchandisers in attendance. Expect to be inspired by 900+ exhibitors from across the world featuring contemporary furniture, seating, carpet and flooring, lighting, outdoor furniture, materials, wall coverings, accessories, textiles, and kitchen and bath for residential and commercial interiors.

In the contemporary landscape, marketing and selling design requires equal parts creativity, grit and patience. It is no longer enough to open a store and wait for customers to walk through the doors. Public relations, social media, online marketing, various sales channels, bricks and mortar showrooms/stores – some combination of all of these tactics are required to stand out among the competition and get the attention of potential clients. This conversation with several established and up-and-coming designers/makers – each with a very different approach to making and to production – will explore a variety of different strategies and approaches and discuss the costs, challenges, and potential pitfalls and upsides of each.

The Anna Hernandez/Luna Textiles Education Fund Award, presented by the IIDA Foundation
ICFF is hosting The Anna Hernandez/Luna Textiles Education Fund Award, presented by the IIDA Foundation at a gala reception on the floor of the Fair. This prestigious award was established to honor the memory of Anna Hernandez, the award-winning founder of Luna Textiles, and recognizes female business owners whose firms specialize in interior design or product design. The recipient of this inaugural award will receive $5,000 from the IIDA Foundation on Wednesday, May 23rd.
In an effort to create a major industry “give back” to support the great work being done to defeat Alzheimers- a worldwide epidemic touching the lives of all, ICFF will also be hosting a silent auction. All 900 ICFF exhibitors will have the chance to donate pieces to be auctioned off at the Fair with the proceeds directly benefiting the Education Fund and The Alzheimer’s Association.
The Milk Stand by Design Milk
Design Milk’s Cash + Carry Popup Shop is returning with a fresh roster of emerging designers from across the U.S. The Milk Stand, curated by Design Milk Founder and Executive Editor, Jaime Derringer, features a well designed array of décor items, jewelry and artwork, all cash-and-carry, at price points to fit a variety of budgets to the ICFF NYC show floor. This year’s vendors include LACE by Jenny Wu, Haptic Lab, Nervous System, Wood & Faulk, plus exclusive merch from Design Milk, and more. The 2018 Milk Stand is designed by California-based design studio Amigo Modern.
Collective Concept @ICFF
With the fair’s move to March in 2018, Collective Design has partnered ICFF, to provide a platform for independent designers during NYCxDesign in May, thus the launch of Collective Concept @ ICFF. Inspired by the process-based explorations that have become a key part of their programming, a handful of established product designers are invited to share what they consider “inspirational” or “alternative” thinking with the audience, revealing a newly conceived product, a revolutionary technology, an unusual pairing of design talents or a unique material used in a thought-provoking way. Collective Design will select a curated group of designers to present in a dedicated section within the fair.
